[Sticky] What to say to people who are against exotic pets

It goes point by point arguing the common arguments against it with facts for exotics. Really well done.

Though at the end I agree we should keep the regulations for exotics the same as domestics though disagree a bit on amounts. A horse or bull is probably about as dangerous as a big cat but should they need special permits to keep? Permits are better than bans but I'm always leery since permits tend to turn into bans eventually. Now if you really had the same type of permits for horses as tigers since similar risks I'd actually be pretty cool with that as it's unlikely to be super restrictive or turn into a ban if it includes large "dangerous" domestics. So do agree in theory but it'll never happen.

The link you posted is just a Photobucket picture of an exotic cat.

I would say, rather than banning/needing permits for specific species/genus/family/etc depending on which way the wind blows, why not go by a weight class instead? I wouldn't be completely opposed to every animal requiring some kind of permit. Would dramatically drop the instances of people buying their kids/friends/relatives a pet they don't want, and so on. Instead of the almost laughable dog license law that never gets enforced, at least here in PA it doesn't.

Typically the larger an animal is, the more thought, time and money that must be put into raising, housing and caring for that animal increases. I think including all pets in this would not only help close the gap between exotic and domestic pet owners, because now they are on the same playing field when it comes to how they get them, but it would make education about this topic more prevalent as it would be more in the public eye if everyone had to do it.

Last time I checked you still need a permit to own Chinese Dwarf Hamsters in New Jersey. And I can't imagine it's that hard to get one. Probably just a proof of sale. But still, that's an extra step that would stop a lot of people who are just not ready or not willing to be a good pet owner from getting one. Not saying that needing a permit will prevent this as law enforcement of these things are minimal at best, but still. If pet stores had to enforce this rule before selling anything from a puppy mill or the like, I think people would at least think twice about it. Rescues could include the permit in the adoption process and maybe get a discount through the organization/state. That would also help screen people out for adoption.

Dogs can vary in size but that could be solved by simply taking the largest average weight of the (on average) largest breed and making that the weight class, as that's the biggest they can get.

Now, this obviously isn't a foolproof plan, because just about anyone can get a driver's license and we all know not everyone on the road is a diligent, kindly driver

I'd be okay with that as at least it would be fair and not single out exotics just because their different. Wont happen though as the domestic owners wont go for it. That's why the attempt at a near total ban on exotics under the guise of invasive issues failed, it included common things like hamsters. But target ban pythons or tigers and no one minds.

Personally I'd rather take my chances in a pen with a domestic raised tiger than a upset bull or stallion. Big animals similar risks no reason to single out one over another.

May need to make some exceptions to just size as some little things can be dangerous.

FL isn't as good a model as it once was but the core idea is good as you need to fill out some basic knowledge of the species to get the permit. You could do similar for the more basic classes but just have it be on basic animal husbandry.

Perhaps a sub-class in the general, all-species weight class for animals that are venomous/poisonous/have another natural defense or survival mechanism that requires a secondary permit for being hazardous via a bite or sting. Not teeth or claws or horns but toxins specifically. Like poisonous fish, venomous snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc. Maybe some questions on how neurotoxins and the like work and what they can do to the human body, and what to do when you've been bitten/stung. Because the general idea is the size of an animal generally notates how difficult it is to keep it in captivity, but of course that's not true for all of them.

Just ideas, these would have to be fleshed out way more IRL, haha.

Sounds perfect to me. Include large domestics with large exotics and the regulations will be reasonable. No 10 mil insurance policies with 50 acre requirements and such.

Kind of like having commercial or non-commercial driver's license, and endorsement/restrictions on it. And of course, the restrictions are on a case-to-case basis. Most of them are "you screwed up so we're putting you on probation" restrictions but others are disability and learner's permit-related.

Love your ideas.

I feel like the exotic pet community needs to come together and confront the USDA and other law makers about the changes we want to see. That's the only way we'll be able to legalize and protect our right to private ownership.

5 Dogs, 2 cats, 2 leopard geckos, 1 guinea pig, 1 axolotl, and a coatimundi currently in my family. 🙂

Exotic "wishlist": red fox, arctic fox, gray fox, bat eared fox, fennec fox, mink, muntjac deer, owl (any species).

I agree, it takes a lot of people to get involved to do this. pressure must be kept up. I tried awhile ago to get people to do this, but, not many wanted to icon-sad

When I'm rich and famous I'll use my wealth and name to lobby to get my ideas pushed into law  I can dream at least, haha.

I found myself an organization I think I (and we) can really get behind.

http://www.naiaonline.org/

They're very adamant about being pro animal WELFARE, and anti animal RIGHTS.
Read more on their position statements, it's really awesome, and I'd love to hear if anyone knows more about them.

Yes they are good. They are the ones who helped organize the fight against the exotic animal hr669 ban bill and actually had someone in/at the committee meetings testifying for our side.
