How do you deal with the antis?

This is something I've found to be very difficult as exotic topics often crop up on other forums and I'm usually the only pro private ownership person on there. I feel like it's my duty as an enthusiast to educate these people, but fighting a wave of stupidity is really hard and I have a hard time staying calm.

I know it's counter productive to get angry, that people will listen to you more if you calmly lay out the facts...which I do in the beginning, but then the idiotic responses end up getting to me. Most people are so stubborn and close minded too, I mean there are even people who refuse to believe that there's a difference between animal welfare and animal rights!

I feel like doing this :wall: and wonder why I even bother since it just makes my blood boil.

How do guys deal with it?

I know what you mean. there are forums out there that most are just anti-exotic. maybe even AR people.
they have their mind set their way, and think they know it all, maybe cause they read about them from AR articles.

I use to try before to explain the difference. but, no one would even want to hear what I had to say.
then there is the really stupid people that told me I should release my animals back to the wild
what they don't know, is many animals in the wild, have a very rough life and most have short life spans.

all you can do is, is tell them, they are entitled to their belief, but, you have experience with exotic animal and
you know the difference. all they hear is negative and believe it.

All the time... I made a similar thread about my frustrations: viewtopic.php?f=40&t=11705

I have a Tumblr blog where I'm in a little "community" (if you could call it that...) debating cetaceans in captivity. I'm pro good marine parks, but I have not gotten as much hate in all these months as I did over a few days when I on that blog "came out" in support of private ownership of exotics.

They wanted to pretty much skin me alive, boil me in tar and roll me in feathers.

Some of my posts on the topic are here:
http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/987110476 ... elieve-you (That's a good one.)
http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/985033934 ... frequently (This is what made them want to throw up. :P)
http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/992163534 ... ogic-which

http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/988046088 ... -not-a-zoo
http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/998098135 ... go-but-its
http://nimwey.tumblr.com/post/988775997 ... -captivity

But remember that it's not hopeless. I was vehemently against people owning wild mammals, and just a picture of a serval on a leash made me want to throw up. 😛 If you can reach through to that, there must be more people than me who can change.

Exotic birds, canines, snakes and hoofstock are my main interests.

I think the most important thing to remember is that a lot of people are just misguided. Like Nimwey, they want to do the best for animals, and they don't realize that being against ownership isn't going to help those species (and perhaps even hurt them).

Being a voice for animals (and their owners) just requires patience, intelligent and well placed comments, and goals. Maybe we can't make everyone think it's okay to own them overnight, but what about having them for conservation? Education? Etc.? Every journey begins with a single step.

4 Fancy Rats
2 American Guinea Pigs
1 Holland Lop Rabbit
1 Rex Rabbit
2 Ferrets
1 Lutino Cockatiel
5 Mixed Breed Cats
1 PitxLab
1 Great Pyr
1 Greyhound
2 Great PyrxAnatolian Shepherds
2 Red Foxes
5 Goats
~100 chickens, ducks, and turkeys

Yeah it's something that's only going to be changed in small steps, I think. The more people that will listen, the better.

Wow, those are amazing articles! I actually feel inspired now after reading those! And it's really encouraging to see the number of people who liked your articles too 😀

I might have to link people to them next time I'm talking with anti exotic folks, if you don't mind of course!

Start by finding out why the person is anti-exotic and then begin your educating with that point. Also, remember that you are not out to convert anyone. It is OK to not agree with pets and/or exotic pets as a personal opinion so long you are not spreading misinformation or interferring with the rights of responsible keepers.

Thank you guys, I get so much hate all the time on that place (of course not really anything with any arguments or subsance to it, just "You don't think like me so I haet you and I hope you die"), so it's nice to see something positive for change. 😛

And go ahead, share it, the internet is for spreading ideas. Grin

I read a article the other on yahoo about a new baby killer whale being born at Sea World. To me, that's a sign that the animals are being well cared for since whales don't breed easily in captivity. The comments section was full anti sea world bs. I keep wondering how long it's gonna take for the Black Fish hype to cool down?

BTW, my links were just blog posts, I don't consider them articles (but go ahead and post them wherever you want) and I didn't think through writing them, I just wrote. 😉
If you want good articles on this topic, you have to check out http://melissaasmith.hubpages.com/ if you haven't already. Her stuff is awe. some.

Yes, KingObeat. Right now, it's "cool" and "sexy/trendy" to hate SeaWorld. Other parks that don't keep their animals nearly as well don't get that kind of hate, it's mainly just SeaWorld. Because Blackfish came out and said you should hate SeaWorld (and were bloody inconsistent about it too; Blackfish doesn't even know its own argument, just as long as SeaWorld appears evil, they're happy). There's no rime or reason, no independent thought, just hop on the feels-train and go on an emotional crusade against SeaWorld. -.-

Exotic birds, canines, snakes and hoofstock are my main interests.

nimway,

I am thinking of doing a page titled "anti-exotics" (suggestions welcome). I would like to write an article on this subject.
but, my problem is, I am not good at wording and don't know all the bad information out there.also having time to do it.
I would like to mention about peta etc, and their greed and antics.

put all your links/info on it, and the link you provided and whatever else I can find. once it is complete. I will add
this page/s to my link bar, my facebook and blog.

now, on flip side of it, I don't want to glorify owning exotics either. I don't want people to think most exotics
are to be raised like cats and dogs. we know they need special care and a lot of understanding.

if anyone can help me out with this, I would appreciate it. I have plans of re-doing my site, but, time right now is an issue icon-sad

Hi Pat,

I have written many articles about the antics of anti-exotic people. They're not online so I can't link you to them here but I could email you them if you're interested in checking them out.

I'm definitely willing to help out and am planning to write actual articles on the topic (the ones I've posted were just posts/replies).

Exotic birds, canines, snakes and hoofstock are my main interests.
