Darla my silver fox died

Found her dead yesterday. she was not dead very long. prior to her dying, I noticed a big change in her. I could tell something was wrong.
she was 12 this year. she had a good life. I doubt a vet would have been able to do anything, except put her down.

I feel bad for Donnie, I can tell he is upset. he is now my only fox I have.

last year, my 1st fox Daryl died. he was close to 13.

I'm sorry, Pat. 🙁 It's so hard to lose any pet, but to lose one out of the blue is hard. I hope Donnie is okay. How does he seem to be coping?

I'm Fable and Ifrit's mommy. Also mommy to Carousel, Breeze, and a bunch of snakes, lizards, and spiders. Oh, and one amphibian!

I'm very sorry to hear this, Pat - I know you were kind of expecting it, but it's still always sad when it happens.

Darla couldn't have had a better momma. She did have a good, long life with you.

thank you everyone for your kind replies.

when Darla went out to the enclosure. I thought she was up in the top tower.
I kept checking up there and couldn't see her. thinking oh heck, how in the hell am I going to get her down if she dies up there.
it is hard for a person to get up there.

a friend of mine was here yesterday, him and gary were outside. my friend walked past the enclosure, she was under a set of hard plastic steps.
their is two large holes in the back along with straw inside, that is when my friend seen her. really weird, cause she never went in that spot.

gary went in the enclosure to get her out. poor donnie was sitting half at the doggie door and half in the enclosure. I felt bad for him, he looked very sad and confused when he seen Darla laying out in the drive way. we were standing over her body in the driveway to decide what to put her in to bury her.

Once she was out in the driveway, I was paranoid and kept asking gary "are you sure she is dead" he checked for a pulse, her eyes were open.
so yes, she was dead.

Donnie is still sad and he seems confused. I just hope one of the raccoons will play with him. but they are all sleeping most of the day.
they go into a semi hibernation in the winter.

thank you again for every ones support.

I'm so sorry, at 12 she had a wonderful long life with you ❤

You are forever responsible for what you've tamed, responsible pet ownership starts with you.
I share my life with 4 red foxes,2 raccoons, a couple human children, my hubby, dogs, and a snake

I am not sure what to give him for enrichment. he don't play with toys. I have a bunch in the room.
you are good with coming up with ideas, maybe you can think of something.
however, foxes are not like raccoons, they don't seem to bother with toys.
maybe a stuffed animal?

daryl had one toy he liked, he would take it with him, then sometimes he would bury it.
I will see if I can find that one.

Daryl was a "helper fox". when I first got Darla, I kept her in a big dog kennel when she was a kit.(not all the time)
Daryl use to bring her food and toys and set it next to the dog crate for her.

When I first got Lucy, Darla brought her food. She would lay it in front of Lucy and stand there and watched her.

Yes twelve is a pretty good age. I know it still hurts though.

Animals need time to grieve too so give him some time.

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is never easy, but she certainly lived a long and happy life with you.

I'm sure Donnie will be okay! He'll get better with time, and you'll have each other to get through it.
